Corcovado - Christ the Redeemer
A tour by train crosses part of the extensive Atlantic Wood located in the National Park of Tijuca that takes the tourist to the top of Corcovado Mount. To 710 meters high is Christ the Redeemer with opened arms to receive its guests. Symbol of faith and hope, the statue came true through the engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and the sculptor Paul Landowski.
The statue was constructed in parts, in France, brought later to Brazil and carried during four consecutive years to the top of Corcovado Mount, by the train of the railroad. Coated of soap-stone, it impresses with 30 meters high and the heart on relief discloses the love for the city.
The Mount was called as Corcovado, because of its hunchback form. In 1824 D. Pedro I leaded the first expedition to the top of that mount. It resulted in a permanent opening way of access to the top. The railroad of Corcovado was the first one electrified in the country. It was inaugurated in 1884, before the monument of Christ, in 1931.
The tour by train for the centenarian railroad of Corcovado is the oldest one of the country and it still attracts more than 700 thousand visitors annually. Between them, popes, kinks, president of Republic and artists who already got fascinated with the unforgettable panoramic landscape of the city seen by the windows of the wagons.
On Corcovado Mount the visitors count on elevators and escalators, beyond snack bars, bathrooms and souvenir stores.
