Petropolis - Imperial Town
A stroll that provides to the visitor to be able to go back more than 150 years ago to a city that already was housing of the imperial family. The region served as passage between Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais - that makes border to Rio - in 1822, year of the Independence of Brazil. For this conquest, D. Pedro I left in search of support to the independence movement.
When the Emperor traveled to Rich Village (Vila Rica), in Minas Gerais, he had been enchanted with the pleasant climate of the mountainous region and with the extensive Atlantic Wood. After being lodged in a farm in the neighborhoods, he made an offer to buy that farm, but the proprietor of the land refused. For 20$ contos de réis, currency of the time, D. Pedro I bought another farm thinking about transforming it into a Palace. Some years later, in 1831, D. Pedro I had to come back toward Portugal because of the political successory crisis and never more it comes back to Brazil. The farm was an inheritance for D. Pedro II, where he made his residence of summer. Today, it is the Imperial Museum that is opened to the visit. The beautiful construction is in neoclassic style.
The city was created by D. Pedro II, in March of 1843 when it signed the decree. A region that opened its arms for the immigrants. The Germans had had basic participation in the construction of the first Brazilian railroad, in 1854, facilitating the access to Petrópolis.
Moreover, the visit to the house of Alberto Santos Dumont is unforgettable. It was projected for him and constructed in 1918 to be the residence of summer of the inventor. A Mountain-Hat house of alpine style, out of the others standard of the houses of the time. Santos Dumont was engineer and the pioneer of aviation when he completed a circuit fore established under official certification of specialists, journalists and of the Parisian Population.
